SBISD 2008-2009 Calendar modified slightly due to Hurricane Ike

During an Oct. 2 morning meeting, the Spring Branch ISD Board of Trustees voted 6-0 to approve a resolution to slightly modify the 2008-2009 school calendar while not requiring students to make up days lost due to Hurricane Ike.

With a focus on regaining instructional time, the Board amended the calendar as follows:

For elementary schools, Oct. 23 and Oct. 24 will no longer be Early Release Days . Students will attend a full school day on these two dates. Campuses will notify parents regarding changes to parent-teacher conference schedules due to this calendar modification.
For middle and high schools, first semester final exams will not be given, and Dec. 17 and Dec. 18 will no longer be Early Release Days. This modification allows students to regain up to four instructional days that would otherwise be used for semester review and final exams. Campuses will communicate with their parents and students regarding the calculation of semester grades for this semester, and teachers will have options for grading-period assessments in lieu of final semester exams. Dual credit students will take their Houston Community College finals based on the community college’s schedule.
For ALL SBISD students, Dec. 19 will remain an Early Release Day.

The Texas Commissioner of Education has indicated that the Texas Education Agency (TEA) will waive up to 10 days of instruction due to Hurricane Ike.

While the Board of Trustees and district leaders examined the possibility of using Bad Weather days built into the 2008-09 SBISD calendar and several other options, the one-time catastrophic nature of Hurricane Ike led to the decision to forgo additional make-up days.

SBISD Superintendent of Schools Duncan Klussmann said of this creative solution, “It is my belief that each of our teachers has the skills and expertise necessary to adjust instruction accordingly to ensure that our students receive the appropriate content for the school year.”
