Darrell
Tully Stadium opened for the football season of 1966. The
first varsity football game played in Tully Stadium was
between Memorial High School and Dallas-Kimball High
School. The stadium is named for Darrell
Tully. Coach Tully as he was known affectionately by many
players and coaches was a former head football coach and
athletic director at Spring Branch High School from 1957
until 1964. In 1964 Coach Tully became full time athletic
director for the school district and remained in that
capacity until his retirement in 1978. The
stadium was constructed for an original cost of 1.2 million
dollars. Originally, the turf was grass but in 1972
Astroturf was installed. Since 1972 there have been two
replacements of the artificial surfaces, once in 1984 and
most recently 1996. The field has approximately 72,000
square feet of Astroturf carpet. The majority of lines and
all numbers and letters are inlaid which prohibits the need
for annual painting for a majority of the field. Seating
capacity of the stadium is 15,000 aluminum seats. Season
passes to home games may be purchased at the central
athletic office in the summer between July and the first
game of the season. The field is home for the district's
four high schools and seven middle schools football
games. Approximately 120
football games are regularly scheduled for Tully Stadium. In
addition to these games over 70 to 80 soccer
matches are played by our four
high schools.
Tully Stadium is available for
rental
by certain qualified groups or organizations. Interested
parties should contact the district
athletic directors office to determine if they qualify
for renting the facility.
