The
SBISD May 2006
Employee of the Month is:
Hortencia Torres
Custodian
Stratford High
School
Her nomination read, in part:
“When one thinks about supporting a
focus on instruction, visions of teachers
with actively engaged classrooms come to mind.
Often, we forget about all those behind the
scenes who make each teachable moment possible.
Recently, I was leaving the campus at around
9:30 p.m. Hortencia was working hard, and
as I told her goodnight, she told me she would
walk me to my car to make sure I made it safely.
She waited while I retrieved all of my things
from the office. She walked with me and waited
outside until she saw me drive away safely.
I realize how thinly spread the custodial
staff is all over the district. The fact that
she was willing to stop her busy evening to
ensure my safety has truly stayed with me
since that day. There is a sense of community
and well-being that has been established by
Hortencia and all she does. This gesture,
in addition to her responsibilities, creates
an environment that is supportive, safe and
allows others to carry out their duties.
Most importantly, the needs of students are
better met, which is the goal of every person
in SBISD.”
