Volunteer of the Month

Mr. Calvin Pratt
Intergenerational Volunteer
Cedar Brook Elementary

Cedar Brook Elementary lovingly refers to Mr. Pratt as, “Mr. Mom”. Another title would also be ‘Mister Fix- It’, a direct quote from many of his nominators. He never fails to help in any way possible, always with a smile on his face and a genuinely caring attitude with everyone he meets. A volunteer for twenty years with Spring Branch schools, he has spent the last three years with Cedar Brook. Through his vast knowledge of the world around us, as a veteran of both the Korean War and WWII, Mr. Pratt has shown the children the true value of community and family.

One of the many ways he does this is with numerous fun, educational lessons. Featuring such topics as: the history of ‘Pumpkin Carving’ and cultural celebrations from around the world, a presentation of an American ‘Victorian Christmas Village’, WWII relics and memorabilia, and finally a Vintage Air Craft display for Memorial Day including a history of the holiday and the airplanes. The Cedar Brook TV station (CBETV) would not even exist if it were not for Mr. Pratt’s vast technical talents. And, as an avid cook he never fails to surprise the faculty and staff with goodies. Mr. Pratt has also been a ‘Zoo Docent’ for five years and was able to assist the Pre- K classes with their first field trip to the zoo, making sure no one got lost, and that they all had a great time.

The giving attitude of Mr. Mom is what brings us here tonight. He exemplifies the model of what a true volunteer can mean to children, their teachers and their school. Self-sacrificing, hard working, caring, concerned, and generous Mr. Calvin Pratt is all of these to so many, and our October Volunteer of the Month!
