November 2005 Volunteer of the Month

Mr. Ormonde Smith
Spring Woods Middle School

Retiree Ormonde Smith began volunteering in SBISD almost 10 years ago as a HUG volunteer at Housman Elementary when he was an octogenarian.   Ormonde is now a nonagenarian and a mentor at Spring Woods Middle School.   The young man Mr. Smith mentors stated that his mentor “is so cool!”

Mr. Smith has been the driving force, along with several other volunteers, behind the Dictionary Project.  Last year as a result of Mr. Smith’s grant writing and fundraising efforts the Dictionary Project put dictionaries in the hands of every 3rd grader in Spring Branch ISD.  Ormonde, a retired manufacturer’s representative who was a General Electric engineer first read about the Dictionary Project in The Wall Street Journal.

Mr. Smith is an inspiration to us all with his amazing energy and concern that children have the tools (a dictionary) they need to be successful readers.  He is the model for life-long learning.
