Chuck Miller
For the past five years, Charles (Chuck) Miller has
helped make student’s homes more livable by delivering
to them beds and furniture. Chuck picks up donated
furniture, repairs it when necessary and is always shopping
for the best deals at resale and retail shops. This
is a true labor of love.
Schools know that students don’t learn well if
they don’t get a good night’s sleep. Chuck
has gone into apartments of students to find that their
family has nothing but a few blankets. He always
does his best to fill the apartment with the essentials--and
sometimes more.
He has delivered dining tables so students and their
families have a place to eat and do homework. Bunk
beds are a welcome site for students who share their
room with many siblings. Chest-of-drawers keep down
clutter and help students learn to organize themselves. Sofas
give the family a place to sit and a sense of normalcy
in their lives.
Chuck and his friend Don Ray are both retired and yet
they manage to carry furniture up narrow staircases
to countless apartments. They are members of the
Chapelwood United Methodist Church’s all volunteer “Year
Round Manna Program”, which has been helping families
for over ten years. All families must be referred
for these services and the numbers served just keep
growing.
At the end of 2006, Chuck had helped students from
24 different SBISD schools.
