October 2006 Volunteer of the Month

Linda Kemper

Linda Kemper
Housman Elementary

Linda has been a volunteer at Housman for the past fourteen years.  She truly exemplifies the type of volunteer everyone strives to be.

For the past four years, Linda has coordinated the Housman HUG (Helping Us Grow) program.  This tutoring and mentoring program partners volunteers with second graders to work on reading and math Monday through Thursday mornings.  Many of the adults are from Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church.  If the hours Linda helps coordinate were added up, it would be more than 100 hours a week toward helping these students.

She also works through the church to have money donated for the HUG program to purchase books and math manipulatives to support the work of the tutors.  She spends a good portion of the summer months recruiting volunteers and ensuring volunteers continue working with the HUG program year after year.

Students in the program enjoy spending time with their tutors/mentors who care and show concern for them.  None of this would be possible without the gracious support of Linda Kemper.
