Maryellen McGlothlin
Guthrie Center

Since 2001, Maryellen McGlothlin unselfishly dedicates time everyday to giving back to Spring Branch ISD students and community and exemplifies the perfect volunteer! Maryellen is a former Spring Woods graduate and parent of two current Memorial High School attendees. When asked why she is so driven to help our students, she said, “My goal is to reach out to the future work force and encourage them to choose a career in nursing…there is an impending severe nursing shortage and jobs are plentiful. But the bottom line is I was a nurse for over 25 years and I loved it!” When one of her interns was asked to describe Ms. McGlothlin, Intern Samantha Frith said, “Whenever my rotation got really challenging and the head nurse was too demanding, Ms. McGlothlin was always there to help me feel like I was the most important person in the unit…her countenance is so comforting!”
Never receiving recognition for her amazing contributions, Maryellen’s generosity to SBISD CATE programs consists of: job placement for Intern graduates, conducting workshops, tours, Advisory Board member (Guthrie Center for Excellence, School of Choice), Career Fairs, Faculty Sponsor for two HOSA programs, Cornerstone Academy’s Coordinator for Career Exploration Specialized Interest and Talent, and Texas Scholars presenter for Cornerstone, Memorial, Northbrook and Spring Branch middle schools. But possibly most impressive is her providing and managing paid Health Science Internships for 35 students to the tune of $343,000.00! This money has provided many of these seniors the means to pursue their medical collegiate dreams.
As one of the Spring Woods High teachers put it, “Maryellen is absolutely #1 in my book. She is a promoter of education and does so much for our students. She is upbeat and a positive roll model”. Maryellen McGlothlin’s dedication and powerful attitude towards making a difference, makes her a most deserving recipient of this honor!
