Jason Roberts received volunteer of the month nominations from Meadow Wood and Thornwood Elementary Schools where his presence has made a big difference. Jason began mentoring at Meadow Wood Elementary in 2002 with the mentors from St. Thomas Presbyterian Church where he was a minister at the time. In 2007 after discussions with the principal concerning the students need for participation in organized sports, Jason began work to give them that opportunity. At first he formed one small baseball team, now he supports students from Meadow Wood and Thornwood Elementary Schools on soccer, baseball and basketball teams for boys and girls ages 5-11. For 2010 Jason helped register and support 150 students from both campuses.
Jason and several fellow church members have formed a non-profit organization, FamilyPoint Resources, which supports the sports as well as other activities for the students in the community. FamilyPoint Resources helps to get the students registered for sports, supplies the coaches for the teams, and makes sure the students have the necessary equipment and transportation to attend practice and the games.
Jason started an After School Homework Club for 4th and 5th graders at Thornwood and Meadow Wood. Along with a group of volunteers they meet twice a week to help students with homework assignments. They have also built in time for discussing social skills and character traits. The students really enjoy the Homework Help because “if you need help you don’t have to stress about it and everybody is nice.”
Jason has brought in the Mosaic Theatre who donated a performance of Casey At Bat and Charlotte’s Web for all of Thornwood’s students. The performance and message of acceptance and assistance for all was well received by the students.
Through Jason’s connection to other organizations like FamilyPoint Resources, Ozone, and Camp Ozark in Mt. Edna, Arkansas, students from Thornwood and Meadow Wood have received scholarships to attend summer camps for the last 3 years. Several students wrote letters of support for Jason, stating how much he has helped them to believe in themselves and to treat others with kindness and respect. As one student stated, “I’ve learned how to show respect by complimenting others for trying hard, by helping others and supporting others.” Jason encourages them to “always do your best”. They see that he is helping them change by “teaching us not to say bad things about ourselves and not to criticize other people.”
Jason has truly made a difference in the lives of the students, their families, and the community through his giving spirit and give of time, talent, and resources to the Meadow Wood and Thornwood communities. We are honored to name Jason Roberts as Spring Branch ISD’s April 2010 Volunteer of the Month.
