Our Our Volunteer of the Month:

This month, we are honored to recognize an exceptional community volunteer who has "distinguished herself as a conscientious and energetic mentor" for two Spring Woods High School students. As noted in the letter of nomination submitted by SWHS GEAR UP mentor coordinator, Norma Alvarenga, Ms. Sprague is responsible, compassionate and honest. "Her positive outlook on life has significantly helped her mentees as she dedicates her time to them every week to help them prepare for their future. Her presence has had a profound effect."

This past year, one of Ms. Sprague's mentees was diagnosed with lymphoma. "Ms. Sprague has been there for her since the day she was diagnosed by spending the night at the hospital, along with weekly visits." Additionally, Ms. Sprague helped the mentee and her family get the financial assistance they needed at this very difficult time. She raised money to purchase a laptop so that her mentee could continue to do her school work from the hospital. Ms. Sprague even helped plan a surprise birthday party at the hospital while her mentee was in recovery.

It is with much pride, admiration and appreciation that we recognize Ms. Laura Sprague, SWHS Mentor, as our October 2010 Volunteer of the Month. Her self-direction, self-motivation and drive will guarantee her positive impact on the students she serves will last a lifetime.
