Nurse
JOB
TITLE:
School Nurse
MAJOR
FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The person in this
position is responsible
for the implementation
and management of
the school health
program which is
designed to serve
each learner through
the delivery of
preventive care,
provision of health
education and the
promotion of a healthful
school environment.
EXAMPLES
OF KEY DUTIES:
The duties of this
position include:
- Delivers professional
care utilizing
the nursing process
(assessment, intervention,
counseling and
referral) to all
students according
to district policy
- Develops a health
management plan
and provides clinical
case management
for students who
are medically
fragile and/or
have specialized
health care needs
- Provides support
and appropriate
supervision to
assigned nurse
assistants and
determines and
provides training
and monitoring
of all unlicensed
school personnel
providing direct
health care services
to students Implements health
screening programs
according to district
and state guidelines
- Provides student
health instruction
and serves faculty
and staff as an
advocate and resource
for health Serves as a primary
member of the
school crisis
intervention team
and provides health
counseling for
students, parents
and staff
- Promotes a healthful
and safe environment
by comprehensive
management of
the district/state
immunization and
communicable disease
programs
- Makes home visits
and serves as
a liaison between
school, home,
community and
other medical
health agencies
- Establishes and
maintains a reporting
and recording
system which utilizes
current technology
in health data
collection
- Supports the district
mission by participating
in campus improvement
planning, school
based activities
and district staff
development initiatives

Provides leadership
in the formulation
and implementation
of campus health
program goals
which promote
health and wellness
for the school
and the extended
school community

This person is directly
responsible to the
building principal.
QUALIFICATIONS: The person in this
position should
have the following
credentials:

Current license
with the State
of Texas Board
of Nurse Examiners
-
Experience in
community health
or school nursing
