Teacher's
Guide to the Health Room
The
School Health Room Can:
- assist
students to function at
their highest level of
wellness and therefore
obtain the maximum benefit
from the educational process.
The
School Health Room is:
- an
avenue through which meaningful
health measures may be
initiated in order for
students to assume responsibility
for their own health,
as well as to receive
care in case of accident,
injury or sudden illness.
An
Appropriate Referral to
the Health Room is:
- any
head injury.
- any
open draining wound or
spillage of body fluids.
- any
complaints of severe pain.
- signs
of sluggish, disoriented
or lethargic behavior.
- evidence
of pale, flushed or bluish
skin color.
- persistent
coughing, audible wheezing
or breathing/respiratory
problems.
- appearance
of rash or skin irritation-possible
communicable disease.
- suspected
sprain, strain or fracture.
- evidence
that medication is being
carried by the student.
- any
symptoms consistent with
a student's known medical
condition, e.g., seizures,
asthma, diabetes, etc.
- a
compelling feeling or
intuition that the student
is not well.
Important
Reminders:
- In
the event of serious accident/injury
or medical emergency,
Health Services personnel
should be called and the
Crisis Management Plan
activated as necessary.
- Carefully
evaluate if a student
needs assistance in getting
to the Health Room.
- Any
student having sustained
a head, neck or back injury
should not be moved until
assessed by the Health
Services Staff. Call for
assistance if there is
any doubt regarding moving
a student.
- Always
feel comfortable in discussing
student health concerns
with Health Services Staff.
