Shrubs

SBISD approved shrub species for planting

Many of the species on this list have color variants, leaf variants and/or flower color variants. Also, it is important to know the soil composition and pH level, (for example, azaleas like a pH between 6.0 and 5.0).

  • Glossy Abelia: 8 to 10 feet in height; full sun to partial shade; small white flowers in summer
  • Pink Abelia: Same as glossy abelia, but has pink flowers
  • Dwarf Abelia: 18 inches in height; full sun to partial shade; white flowers in summer
  • Aucuba: 8 to 10 feet in height; likes shade; shiny green foliage, red berries on female plants
  • Gold Dust Aucuba: 8 to 10 feet in height; like shade; green leaves speckled with gold
  • Common Boxwood: 6 to 8 feet in height; full sun; tight thick appearance, southern favorite; green foliage all winter; excellent for mass planting; shears well
  • Cherry Laurel: full sun to partial shade; hardy, tough, fast growing plant; tear out those disease prone red tip photinia and put these in; great plant for screening
  • Carissa Holly: 3 to 5 feet in height; full sun to partial shade; compact and rounded with glossy green foliage
  • Nandina: Sometimes called Heavenly Bamboo; grows up to 8 feet in height, partial sun to shade; fine foliage; clusters of red berries; red fall and winter leaf color
  • Blue Rug Juniper: Prostrate growth; sun to partial shade; interesting plant; branches have a bluish cast
  • Azaleas: up to 8 feet in height; full sun to partial shade; Houston favorite; magnificent flowers in the spring; many colors to choose from; loves acid soil does well around pine trees; looses all leaves in the winter; ;must be pruned soon after flowering
  • Crepe Myrtle: up to 10 feet in height; full sun to partial shade; Houston favorite; flowers can be lavender purple, pink, red or white and blooms from summer to winter; prune in the spring
  • Japanese Flowering Quince: up to 6 feet in height; full sun; normal blossom time is in early spring, but will bloom in warm spell and continues through spring; flower colors can be white, pink, red, orange-red and orange.
  • Spiraea: up to 6 feet in height; sun to partial shade; another flowering shrub; different varieties bloom at different times of the year; will have long arching branches completely covered with white blooms
  • Indian Hawthorn: evergreen having a natural compact growth and showy pink flowers that bloom in late spring
  • Sage: up to 3 feet in height; full sun; interesting, evergreen shrub with bright green glossy leaves; takes trimming beautifully
