Release
of Student Directory Information
Student directory information is considered to be public
information and will be released to anyone who follows the
procedures for requesting this type of information unless
parents or guardians object to its disclosure.
Directory information includes the student’s name,
address, telephone number, date and place of birth, grade
level, pictures, participation in officially recognized
activities and sports, weight and height of members of athletic
teams, dates of attendance and other similar information.
As a service to students and families, a directory of students’ names,
addresses and telephone numbers is printed at some schools.
Unless otherwise stated, this is also considered public
information.
Parents and guardians of students have the right to refuse
public release of any or all directory information from
student educational records without their prior written
consent. Notice of refusal should be given to the
school on the day of registration or before Sept. 1.
The form for parents or guardians to indicate
their preference regarding release of directory information
for 2007-2008 will be included within student information
packets distributed on the first day of classes.
In separate but related news, federal No Child Left Behind
(NCLB) legislation allows military recruiters to access
secondary students’ names, addresses and telephone
listings. Parents have the right to request that student
information not be released to military recruiters, but
it is the responsibility of parents to notify the high school
principal in writing if they elect not to have this type
of student information released.
SBISD recognizes the inherent right of
privacy of its students. The district has adopted policies
which meet all requirements of the Family Educational
Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 and state and federal
Open Records Laws. Copies of these policies may be obtained
from the Office of the Superintendent.
