Landrum Middle
School
Teacher
of the year and runner-up collaborate
on art field trip!
February 2007 - Andres Bautista (teacher
of the year) and Stephanie Walton (runner-up)
along with Loren Gardner brought art students
from Landrum and Northbrook Middle Schools
together for a field trip to the Museum
of Fine Arts and Moody Gallery.
On February 6th, a select group of art
students from both schools boarded a bus
for two destinations. The first destination
was Moody Art Gallery near the Richmond/
Kirby area. Ms. Betty Moody
had agreed to visit with the students about
what it takes to be an artist and to run
a gallery. The students were fascinated
by the “new” art that was currently
on display at the gallery.
After eating lunch at Herman Park the students
arrived at the Museum of Fine Arts. French
masterpieces from The Metropolitan Museum
of Art in New York are currently on display. The
Met graciously choose the MFAH to exhibit
this work while part of the museum undergoes
renovation. For some students, this
was a once in a lifetime chance to see these
paintings up close. Docent guides
provided by the museum conveyed a new level
of understanding to everyone about the Impressionist
and Post-Impressionist painters. Many
paintings that are familiar to students
in the form of prints where right there
before their eyes.
Students learned about the Salon as well
as the new breed of modern artist who broke
against tradition and established new forms
of painting. Students were able to
see the different brush strokes of artists
and how they choose to use color. The
students returned to school with a new vocabulary
and new ideas to incorporate into their
own artwork. The trip was a great
success as students learned about some American
art of today as well as French art from
the late 1800’s and early 1900’s.
