The Regional
Event Process
Each student is scheduled for an eight-minute private
interview, with an art professional. During this valuable
teaching time, the students will discuss their artwork.
explaining their creative process, media, and techniques
while using an established criteria.
Art students are placed into division according art experience
and the number of years that they have studied art. Medals
are awarded to any student who attains the established standard
and receives a rating of four.
All students receive an individually detailed jurors rating
sheet that serves as an instructional tool to reinforce quality
art education. This form defines areas of strength and areas
that may need growth.
At the conclusion of the regional events, artwork from each
division are selected by the entire panel of jurors to advance
to the state meet.
The State
Event Process The state meet occurs in April at a major university,
such as the University of Houston, Clear Lake.
Students, teachers, parents, administrators, and school
board members are invited to attend this exciting state-wide
event.
Since students are not required to be interviewed at the
state event, they may submit artworks to be juried without
attending. This allows for the student to submit artworks
without being penalized for not being able to attend.
The state event provides workshops, interviews with jurors,
exhibits, and educational activities for students. It is
an exciting opportunity for visual art students. At the conclusion
of this eventful day, all students attend an awards ceremony
in their honor.
How Did
it Begin? In the early 1980's, the Texas Art Education Association, one
of the largest state organizations of art educators in
the United State, began looking at high school competitions
in other subject areas run by the University Interscholastic
League (UIL). Information was carefully studied and compiled
to see if such an event could benefit students of the visual
arts.
In the fall of 1990, after years of study and work, the
program was piloted in Houston, Texas. In that first year
it was an overwhelming success with the more than one thousand
students and teachers that participated. For the next tow
year sit was fine-tuned and presented to TAEA for approval
to go state wide.
In the spring of 1994, the top regional high school art
students from across the state came together for the first
state-wide event of its kind in our country's history at
the University of Teas at Arlington. It was an awesome sight
and a monumental success.
What is the Purpose
The purpose of the Texas Art Education Visual Art
Scholastic Event is to recognize exemplary
student achievement in visual art through individual
expression of ideas applying the elements and principles
of art based upon research of art media and art history.
Specific benefits to students include:
- develop self-esteem
- increase self confidence through discussions with other
art educators
- preparation for self evaluation through portfolios
in scholarship competition
- recognition by their peers
What Can I Do?
The visual arts play a very important part of the real
world skills that are essential in all students' lives
today. TAEA/VASE helps teachers to focus on skills that are
now being implemented in the National Standard. It allows
art students to be recognized in ways other students have
known for years.
Encourage school district in your area to become involved
in the regional event for their area and a part of the state
organization.
