External Research
Criteria for Conducting Reserach?  
Requests for approval to conduct research projects within the Spring Branch Independent School District are made by completing the Spring Branch ISD application and submitting the documentation required below.

Documentation:
A completed Spring Branch ISD application (both electronic and paper copy)

Electronic copy must be submitted to Jennifer Cobb: jennifer.cobb@springbranchisd.com

Paper copy must be submitted with research proposal and must include the signatures of the researcher, faculty sponsor, and department chair.

A copy of the approved research proposal by committee, if applicable

Proof of all university approvals on the application, if applicable

Human subjects or IRB approval, if applicable

A copy of all instruments (tests, questionnaires, interviews, etc.)

A copy of any letters to parents, teachers, administrators, and students (letters of consent, cover letters for study, etc).

Informed consent letters must be active and consist of:

  Purpose of the research and how the findings will be used.
  What the subject's participation will involve by way of procedures, time, etc.
  Possible benefits for the subject, district or others
  Statement of risk
  Statement of confidentiality
  Statement indicating that the subject is free to withdraw from the research at any time without penalty
  Application should also indicate the specific campuses the researcher would like to contact

Study
The description of methodological procedures include, research design, sampling design (including specifically targeted schools), and data analyses.

The research design includes clearly-stated research questions and hypothesis. These questions and hypothesis are derived and supported by previously published research.

The study clearly addresses one or more of the district's goals.

The study must benefit Spring Branch ISD.

The study does not seriously interrupt the regular school program and makes no undue demands upon the time of students, teachers, administrators, or other district personnel.

The study indicates a date by which the Research Review Committee can expect to receive a final copy of the study.

The study does not take place during districtwide testing periods.

Conducting the study requires no cost to Spring Branch ISD. The investigator will be responsible for any costs attributed to conducting the study.

The study is not offensive to the values and standards of the school, community, or any racial or ethnic group and does not inquire in an obtrusive manner into religion, gender, home, or family life.

Confidentiality of Information
The study must not violate the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (http://www.ed.gov/offices/OM/fpco/ferpalist.html) Any study involving students requires written consent of the parent or guardian and the student. Any study involving access of employee records must be voluntary and requires written consent of the employee.

The study makes provisions for protecting the confidentiality of personal data concerning pupils and employees.

The study must report only group data, and no information which can be traced directly or by inference to specific students, family members or school will be included.

If student identification by name, social security number, PEIMS number, or other means is necessary for bringing data together on a specific student, the researcher must remove this identification as soon as data have been assembled, and under no condition permit this identification to be shared with other parties.

Researcher must destroy all materials gathered which contain personally identifiable information after the purposes for which the material was gathered is completed.

Results
Approval of the application commits the researcher to supply Spring Branch ISD with results of the study within 30 days of completion.

By asking for district approval to perform research, the researcher accepts that the final copy of the study may be posted on the District's web site.

Spring Branch Independent School District reserves the right to terminate any research study/activity in progress at its discretion.
