  Frequently Asked Questions

What is Desktop Publishing?
Desktop Publishing is the ability to manipulate text through word processing; create images - either original drawings, clip art, or photos; and merge these elements electronically to create camera-ready publications.
I know what I want my publication to look like, but I can't find the picture. How can you help?
Our resources include CDs of graphics, photographs, clip art, and 20 years of experience making something out of nothing!
Where can I find examples and ideas to get started on my publication?
A portfolio of past projects is on display in the IM Services office. Feel free to stop by and look through this at your convenience.
What if I have photographs that I would like to include in my project?
Printed photos should be brought to our office to be scanned and electronically merged into a document. The photographs will be returned in their original condition. Digital photos can be emailed (if only one or two) or brought in on CD. These images will also be electronically merged into the document.

If you feel that your photographed subject needs enhancing or cropping, our highly-skilled graphic specialists will be delighted to assist you. (Please be sure to have proper permission for persons in these photographs.)
What software must be used when sending files electronically to Instructional Media Services for desktop publishing?
  Microsoft Word Macromedia FreeHand
  Microsoft Excel Filemaker Pro
  Microsoft PowerPoint SimpleText
  AppleWorks (ClarisWorks) Adobe Acrobat
  Rich Text Format Microsoft Publisher
  PageMaker
Though we make no guarantees, we can sometimes open older software such as
  Microsoft Works WordPerfect
And images saved as
  PCT (PICT) PNG
  EPS BMP
  TIF (TIFF) GIF
  JPG (JPEG)
I have a document in hard copy only that needs to be revised. I don't want to retype it. Help!
We can scan the text document and convert it to a rich text file (RTF) that can be read by word processing software. Most of the formatting is retained. You can then make changes on the new electronic version using most popular word processors.

I would like to receive via e-mail an electronic version of my working document so that I might proof it . Is this possible?
Yes, it is. In most instances we can e-mail you a copy of your document in "pdf" format. This will allow you to view your document as it is seen on the screen here at Instructional Media Services, even if you do not have the software or fonts on your computer in which the document was originally created. In order for you to read this file you would need the software Adobe Acrobat Reader which should be available on your computer.
