The SBISD Bilingual Program provides a framework for deliberate balance of instruction using primary language and English and is based on :


• Belief that bilingualism is a tool that can be used to promote strong academic skills.

• Belief that students can benefit from the experience cognitively, educationally, socially, and economically.

  In order to ensure the academic success of Spanish-speaking students, the SBISD Bilingual Program provides :

• A framework for deliberate balance of instruction using primary language and English.
  
  
• An educational approach where Spanish and English languages have equal value and status in the teaching and learning process.
  
  
• An educational approach supported by sound pedagogical research on the education of limited English proficient students.

Many different instructional materials are used in the bilingual classrooms.
For the ESL component of the bilingual program, the textbook committee selected ESL: Accelerating English Language Learning by Scott Foresman in grades 1 - 5.

This program is available on 17 SBISD elementary campuses.
