Spring Branch Independent School District accepts the
responsibility to ensure that all of our students have
a strong academic, social, and emotional foundation– youth
who will become responsible, caring citizens and leaders
for the future.
With the input of community, staff, and students, SBISD
Board of Trustees approved a Five-Year Educational Plan,
which includes goals addressing character development,
ethics and a culture of safety and respect.
The SBISD Social and Emotional Learning Collaborative
has been a yearlong initiative to bring together multiple
areas of the district to create a systematic approach among
the programs and services supporting the social and emotional
development of our students. Additionally, the Collaborative
was charged with developing a framework for building a
common vocabulary and belief system for the district to
assure that we are focused on the needs of the “whole
child.”
The Search Institute’s 40 Developmental
Assets will serve as the District’s framework for
assuring that students’ social and emotional needs
are addressed so that they can maximize their learning
experience. Research in youth development
indicates when adults interact positively with young
people, build on their strengths and what is going well
with them, we will see “ASSET-RICH” children. The
more assets young people develop, the more they will
be prepared for situations in life that challenge their
inner strength and confidence.
The Collaborative includes: Guidance and Counseling, Administration,
Safe and Drug Free Schools, Health Fitness, Community Network
and Community Relations. The Collaborative will continue
to guide the District’s implementation of the Developmental
Assets framework.
Our talented teachers from The Guthrie Center, Patty Nilsson
and Mike Radler, developed the slogan and symbol. The
person with the big heart is the symbol of the CARES Initiative. The
four different colored layers of the heart represent the
four internal assets, those characteristics and behaviors
within a person that help them to become caring and responsible.
The two legs and two arms represent the four external assets,
those positive experiences people receive from others around
them.
We are asking for your commitment to become
“ASSET-BUILDERS” for
our students.
