Community Awareness

MHS Directory "Asterisk Program - The Community Network administers the MHS Directory "Asterisk Program." The Community Network sends home a Parent Agreement at the beginning of the school year in which parents agree that they will: actively chaperone teen socializing in their homes and not allow alcohol or drugs to be used; welcome telephone calls from other parents concerning their children and their activities; and have their names listed in the MHS Student Directory, noted by an asterisk to reflect their commitment to these actions.

New Student Orientation for Parents or "Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Memorial High School That’s Outside the Manual - The Community Network presents a parent orientation session each Fall at the beginning of the school year. In addition to providing practical tips about how things operate at MHS, parents can ask questions about all of the not-so-obvious issues that may concern them as the new school year begins.

Community Network Publications - The Community Network helped devise and distributes "Drinking and the Law," a summary of Texas laws concerning the consequences of drinking, driving, and other offenses relating to minors, and "Hazing & the Law," which outlines the law against student hazing or bullying. The Community Network also has helped develop and recommended chaperone guidelines for use by parents at high school parties and dances.

The Community Network Newsletter - The Community Network publishes a newsletter that is mailed to all MHS parents several times per year. The Community Network newsletter contains articles by MHS students on such varied subjects such as parental pressure, "what I would do if my friend went astray," the MHS Drug Knot, Mustang Mentor, and SAP (Student Assistance Program) programs, schedules of upcoming programs, and information about substance abuse resources available in our community.
