Suggestions
for Earning Original or Regaining Credit
Alternative Learning Assignment (ALA)– for
students who are losing credit for the class
as a result of 9 absences or more. For
each hour of class you are absent, you must
make up 1 hour of an ALA. For more information
regarding this option, see your grade level
principal.
Credit by Exam–Students
may earn original credit by earning a passing
score on subject test. Foreign Language
Credit by Exams are offered throughout the
school year. See your counselor for
latest test dates. Other subject area
exams are offered twice in a school year;
typically June and July. See your
counselor for more information on these
opportunities.
Houston Community
College (HCC)—Students
may earn original credit by attendance
at one of the HCC campus at night or during
the weekends. For coursework or
credit to be accepted, a student must receive
permission from the home school counselor
or designee to attend. A maximum
of two credit units may be earned at HCC.
PLATO Lab—Students
who have failed classes needed for graduation
can recover credit by taking a computer
program course called PLATO at the computer
lab at some schools. The courseware
modules contain tutorials, drills, application
and problem solving activities, and mastery
tests. This opportunity is self-paced
and is open after school. See your
counselor for an application.
School of Choice
(SOC)—Students
can sign up for credit restoration/retake
or for original credit sessions held at
SOC during the evening. There will
be sessions in the fall and in the spring. The
sessions are open to every campus. Original
credit is also available but has to be
approved by the building principal. See
your counselor for an application.
Summer School—Students
may earn original credit or regain credits
lost through summer school programs. For
coursework or credit to be accepted, a student must receive
permission from the home school counselor
or designee to attend any summer school
program. A maximum of two credit units
may be earned during summer school.
For more information on any
of these programs or others, remember to
see your counselor!
