Dyslexia Program

Spring Branch ISD’s Dyslexia Instructional Program is a regular education program under the direction of the Language Arts Coordinator, Judy Wallis.  The district currently has 12 full time units serving all schools:   elementary, middle and high school.

A student is identified for assessment after the classroom teacher has provided additional support within the classroom and the student continues to struggle and exhibits the characteristics of dyslexia or a related disorder.  The Response to Intervention (RTI) pyramid of intervention is followed.  If the student continues to struggle after Tier III Intervention, a conference is held to discuss possible testing for dyslexia.  If the student qualifies for the Dyslexia Instructional Program, the student receives direct service from the Dyslexia Specialist assigned to that campus.

Identification of dyslexia or a related disorder must be determined based on the following:

  • student has not made academic progress commensurate with potential
  • student has characteristics of dyslexia or a related disorder
  • student has adequate intelligence

The following factors must NOT be used to identify a student for the dyslexia program:

  • student’s primary language is not English
  • student lacks experiential background
  • student has had a brain injury, disease or surgery

Please refer to the Dyslexia Information Chart
