Description of the Mathematics Curriculum Framework

Spring Branch ISD has an exemplary Mathematics Curriculum Framework in the hands of every grade 1-6 teacher. As part of the District's Long Range Plan, a Mathematics Curriculum Framework is used when planning for instruction. The document was produced by a team of 20 master teachers, with the support of Libby Kletke, Elementary Mathematics Coordinator, and Maggie Dement, Secondary Mathematics Coordinator. Dr. Susan Williams with the University of Houston consulted with the team through the entire process.

The Mathematics Framework is an effective and much needed tool for teachers because it gives a grade 1-6 in-depth look into each of six strands: Whole Number Operations and Computation, Fractions and Decimals, Geometry, Developing Algebraic Thinking, Probability and Statistics, and Measurement. Every teacher in grades 1-6 has the entire document so that they can explore the concepts for each strand at their grade level, at the grade level below, or the grade level above. For example, a third grade teacher who is working on geometric concepts can address students' needs by analyzing the concepts that have been taught at earlier grade levels and the concepts taught in later grades. Textbooks, in contrast, address only one specific grade level.

Each strand of the Framework also includes project and extension ideas, ways to connect mathematics to other content, mathematical vocabulary pertinent to the strand, and resources such as textbooks and literature books that help to introduce or reinforce concepts.
