High School Course Descriptions
Course Offerings and Campuses

DANCE

Dance courses may be used to fulfill health fitness and fine arts credit on general or advanced transcripts. After fulfilling requirements for health fitness, students may take dance as an elective.

Dance I-IV
9, 10, 11, 12. District Credit: 1/2-4 units
Provides opportunity to develop fundamental skills in ballet, modern, jazz, tap, folk, character and ethnic.
Prerequisite: Taken sequentially


MUSIC, GENERAL

Music Theory I, II
9, 10, 11, 12. Credit: 1-2 units
Students learn how musical elements are used by composers from a variety of cultures and historical periods and create their own compositions using standard musical notation. Typically students enrolled do not participate in public performance, but do perform in class from time to time and evaluate varied musical compositions.


MUSIC, VOCAL (Courses are sequential I through IV)

Choral Music I-IV
9, 10, 11, 12. Credit: 1-4 units
Students sight-read and perfect choral music for performance learning vocal and choral techniques appropriate for their level of expertise and experience. Placement in one of the following ensembles is based upon an audition with the choir director taking into account student proficiency and interest as well as voicing requirements. Regardless of the performance group to which they are assigned, students are expected to increase their working knowledge of music theory, history, and appreciation. 


MUSIC, INSTRUMENTAL (Courses are sequential)

Band I-IV
9, 10, 11, 12. Credit: 1-4 units
Students read and perfect band music for marching and concert performance learning instrumental technique appropriate for their level of expertise and experience. Placement in Symphonic (varsity) or Concert (non-varsity) Band is based upon an audition with the band director taking into account student proficiency and instrumentation requirements of the ensemble. Regardless of the performance group to which they are assigned, students are expected to increase their working knowledge of music theory, history, and appreciation.

Jazz Band I-IV
9, 10, 11, 12. Credit: 1-4 units
The jazz band class is designed to develop listening and improvisational skills as well as teach music theory.  Emphasis is placed on small group performance.  Students will explore jazz, listen to styles and perform.  Pianists, guitarists, and bassists may be in the jazz band w/prior approval of the director.  All other students must be enrolled in a band class.

String Orchestra I-IV
9, 10, 11, 12. Credit: 1-4 units
Students read and perfect string orchestra music for concert performance learning instrumental technique appropriate for their level of expertise and experience. Placement in Symphonic (varsity) or Philharmonic (non-varsity) Orchestra is based upon an audition with the orchestra director taking into account student proficiency and instrumentation requirements of the ensemble. Regardless of the performance group to which they re assigned, students are expected to increase their working knowledge of music theory, history, and appreciation.


THEATER

Theater Arts I-IV
9, 10, 11, 12. Credit: 1-4 units
The theater courses are designed to begin with fundamentals and progress to advanced techniques.  Students are acquainted with pantomime, improvisation, and rudiments of acting and then develop towards solving artistic problems.

Varsity Theater
Varsity theater is an intensive and advanced course which involves choreography and main-stage production.  This class requires pre-approval of the director.

Technical Theater I-II
Students will develop and apply skills to basic theories of design in color, drawing, lighting, costuming, props, and interpretation in stage design.
