Mission
Statement
The
Science Center is a science museum and resource center that is
committed to developing an appreciation and understanding of science
among the students, teachers and patrons of the community. We believe
that 1) the teaching and learning of science is a life-long
journey, 2) a better understanding of science enhances our
opportunity for a higher quality of life, and 3) science
teachers should be supported with effective resources and provided
with on-going professional development opportunities.
Brief
History
The
idea of a Science Center was conceived by the late Robert A. Vines
in the late 1950's. From the old library building at Spring Branch
Elementary School, Mr. Vines traveled to schools lecturing on the
wonders of nature's plants and animals. In 1967, SBISD purchased
a vacant church building, the present site of the Science Center
that bears its innovator's name. This building was converted into
the first exhibit hall, later being remodeled into the Texas Wildlife
Sciences Hall. In 1971, the Halls of Geology and Oceanography were
built through bond fund allocations. The Jack Roach Hall of Exotic
Animals was added in 1974 as a result of a generous donation by the
Roach family. Subsequently, the Gallery of Natural History and the
5 acre arboretum, complete with an outdoor classroom nestled under
large hardwood trees, were developed. Most recently, a 2800 square
foot resource warehouse and living materials center were added to
the Science Center complex.
