Twenty-five art students at Landrum Middle School exhibited their works inside Terminal E at Bush Intercontinental Airport recently as part of a Celebration of Diversity exhibit sponsored by Continental Airlines.

The combined collection of student works, totaling 32 pieces, had themes ranging from musicians to cowboys. The young artists are either current or former students of Landrum Middle art teachers Andres Bautista and Morna Simon-Raffel. The airport display was on view during November.

Three students who took Bautista’s Pre-Advanced Placement (Pre-AP) art class won $100 savings bond for their efforts. They are Landrum Middle students Jose Hernandez and Luis Orozco, and Northbrook High School ninth-grader Gustavo Pina.

Jose created a family portrait. Luis’ award-winning work was a mandala-style design, and Gustavo’s noteworthy works included paintings of a soccer game and an Aztec warrior.

The art students also toured the airport terminal, received a private tour of a Boeing 757 jet, and were treated to lunch by the Houston-based airline.

Students who displayed works include Jessica Hernandez and Armando Morales, ninth-graders at Northbrook High; and Inri Diaz and Eduardo Miranda, both of whom are now Memorial High ninth-graders.

Landrum Middle students who displayed works include Salvador Sandoval, Estrella Garcia, Arturo Romero, Maria Ramirez, Harold Bonilla, Adrianna Guillen, Itzel Diaz, Sarah Johnson, Miguel Aviles, Romeo Garcia, Katy Johnson, Angel Lopez, Jocelyn Loyola, Julie Nguyen, Arturo Ramirez, Morgan Ramirez, Luis Sandoval and Jenny Wehrling.

In addition, students in the middle school’s Bit by Bit Mosaic Program created large columns for the themed exhibit focusing on the Day of the Dead cultural celebration, or Dia de las Muertos.
