Meet a Volunteer!

Names: Lauren Klausmeyer and
Katherine Madeley

Campus: Stratford High School

Calling: Lauren, who plays Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz, is a SAP Mentor at Spring Forest Middle and Sherwood Elementary schools. Katherine, who is a Jitterbug dancer in the production, is a Future Teachers of America member and assists the music teacher at Wilchester Elementary.

Why they do it: “I like working with kids,” Lauren says. “It’s interesting and fun, and I become close to the students. I’ll really miss them next year.” Katherine is thinking about a career as a music teacher. “Working with the students makes me want to be in music.”

............................................................................................................................

Name: Novice and George Bruner

Campus: Ridgecrest Elementary, 6 years

Calling: George, a Memorial Lions Club member, and his wife, Novice, help hundreds of deserving students receive holiday presents through the club. The Lions Club also assists students who need eyeglasses.

Why they do it: “My husband has played Santa Claus for 50 years. He gets a blessing out of it and now I get a blessing out it, too. I can get tired. I don’t put up a tree anymore. We had gifts and Christmas stockings for 200 children last year. We visit the homes and see the need.”

............................................................................................................................

Name: Christa Moser

Campus: Nottingham Elementary and Clay Road YMCA

Calling: As childcare director at the Clay Road Family YMCA, Christa coordinates after-school programs for 10 SBISD elementary schools. She is the parent of two children enrolled at Nottingham Elementary, where she serves on the PTA.

Why she does it: “As a parent, it’s very important to be involved in what is going on in your child’s school. There are a lot of children without an adult influence in their lives. It’s a rewarding experience for a volunteer to see a child grow because of their involvement.”

............................................................................................................................

Name: Parents Paula Melchor and Manuel Cruz

Campus: Woodview Elementary, 2 years

Calling: Paula and Manuel have two sons enrolled at Woodview Elementary. Paula is often a parent chaperone on student field trips, ranging from museums to ranches.

Why they do it: “We like to take care of our children, know that they are OK and stay close to them. The school is great. The teachers need help with field trips to control a big group, especially young boys.”
