Nominations for Elementary and Secondary Teacher of the Year have been received this year from all Spring Branch ISD campuses.
The district’s Teacher of the Year Committee will review nomination materials and choose three top elementary and three top secondary finalists by the end of March. After committee interviews in April, Superintendent of Schools Duncan Klussmann will announce the district’s 2008 Elementary and Secondary Teachers of the Year during the district’s annual Service Awards.
This year’s Service Awards and Teacher of the Year Reception will be held at the Omni West Houston Hotel.
Teachers of the Year represent SBISD in regional competition and, if named winners there, go on to represent the district in state and national competition. District winners will also receive a $2,000 professional growth stipend from the district, $1,000 from the Spring Branch Education Foundation, $250 from First Community Credit Union, a trophy-style Golden Apple award and gift packages from district partners.
Spring Branch has named Teachers of the Year who went on to win regional honors in 1990, 1994, 1999 and 2000. Spring Branch educators were named Texas Teachers of the Year in 1983, 1985, 1989 and 2000, a record history of recognition for a Texas public school district.
Last May, Northbrook High social studies teacher Donald Miller and former Hunters Creek Elementary teacher Samantha Melvin were named Secondary and Elementary Teachers of the Year. When Samantha resigned due to family relocation, finalist Judi Van Horn of Woodview Elementary was elevated to the open elementary position and competed at the regional level along with Donald Miller.
