Six campus-nominated educators have been named finalists in the 2008 SBISD Elementary and Secondary Teacher of the Year competition. The district’s Teacher of the Year Committee reviewed nomination materials and chose the three elementary and three secondary finalists.

This year’s three elementary finalists are Sydney Bermack of The Bear Boulevard School for Early Learning, Mary Huffman of Terrace Elementary and Maria Solorzano of Edgewood Elementary.

At the secondary level, this year’s finalists are David Leeder of Memorial High, Maurine Richter of Cornerstone Academy and Susan Trepagnier of Memorial Middle School.

Nominations for elementary and secondary Teacher of the Year were received this year from all SBISD campuses. The Teacher of the Year Committee will interview all six finalists, then vote on the top two candidates. Superintendent of Schools Duncan Klussmann will announce the district’s two winning teachers during the district’s May 7 Service Awards.

The two Teachers of the Year will represent SBISD in regional competition and, if successful at that level, they will compete for the highest state honor bestowed on a teacher – Texas Teacher of the Year.

District winners will also receive a trophy-style Golden Apple award, a $2,000 professional growth stipend from the district, $1,000 from the Spring Branch Education Foundation, and $250 from First Community Credit Union.

Spring Branch has named Teachers of the Year who went on to win regional honors in 1990, 1994, 1999 and 2000. Spring Branch educators were named Texas Teachers of the Year in 1983, 1985, 1989 and 2000.
