Plan ahead for the new school year – now!
Parent information and orientation meetings
on Two-Way Dual Language program offerings
for the 2008-2009 school year will be held
at Cedar Brook and Sherwood elementary schools
in the weeks ahead.
Through this increasingly popular program,
Spring Branch children have the opportunity
to become bilingual speakers, readers and
writers at an early age. They gain valuable
language skills that will have lasting benefits
in the world in which they will live and
work as adults.
Pine Shadows
Sherwood Elementary
A Parent Information session will be held
at 8 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 20, in the Sherwood
Elementary School Library, 1700 Sherwood
Forest. The campus invites all interested
Two-way Dual Language program families to
this informative meeting.
Parents of young children who will be 4
years old or 5 years old before Sept. 1,
2008, will benefit from this session. Session
topics to be discussed are Dual Language
curriculum and structure, enrollment requirements,
eligibility, tuition, transportation and
a possible Jan. 31 lottery for student selection.
A tour of the Sherwood program’s
prekindergarten and kindergarten classrooms
will be conducted during the Dec. 20 meeting,
too. Students who remain enrolled in the
program will learn to read, write and speak
Spanish and English by the end of fifth
grade.
The Sherwood program offers an enriched
educational program that uses two languages
for the purpose of instruction. Classrooms
are designed to be half English speaking
students and half Spanish speakers. Half
of instruction is conducted in English,
half in Spanish.
In addition, a Parent Orientation for new
students will be held at 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.
on Tuesday, Jan. 15, also at Sherwood Elementary.
The families of new students must attend
either the day or evening orientation. To
learn more, please call 713-365-4800.
Cedar Brook Elementary
Parents of prospective new students are
invited to a site visit of Two-Way Dual
Language classes at Cedar Brook Elementary,
2121 Ojeman Road, at 8 a.m. on Thursday,
Jan. 10. A mandatory Parent Orientation
will be held in two separate sessions at
8 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 17.
Cedar Brook’s successful Dual Language
program, now in its 11th year of operation,
is designed so that students who remain
enrolled in the program learn to read, write
and speak Spanish and English by the end
of fifth grade. Instruction is delivered
in both languages, but at Cedar Brook the
division of language varies by grade level.
Graduates of the first Dual Language class
are now enrolled in 10th grade Dual Language
classes at SBISD’s Westchester Academy
for International Studies, the district
charter middle and high school.
The program has openings for new prekindergarten
and kindergarten students. At other grade
levels, limited enrollment depends on the
student’s level of language development
in both Spanish and English.
During the Jan. 17 Parent Orientation,
information will be provided on program
goals, history, class composition, language
expectations at each grade level, student
academic performance, an enrollment lottery,
and level of parent involvement.
For more details, please call 713-365-5020,
or visit the Cedar Brook Elementary website
through the district’s homepage at www.springbranchisd.com to

informational video about the Dual Language
option for Spring Branch students.
