• Private - Local and national foundation, corporation, and businesses; individuals; educational and professional associations, universities; and special interest groups. Example: http://www.shelloil.com

• Federal - Large departments within the US government and a variety of smaller agencies whose budgets allocate funds for special projects. Example: US Department of Education Federal Register http//www. ed.gov

When starting your proposal, keep in mind that most granting agencies, including government agencies, private foundations, and corporations, have their own sets of rules and funding objectives. Grant evaluators (professionals who read and recommend funding to granting agency) often complain that grant writers don't follow instructions. Therefore, carefully read and strictly adhere to the respective granting agencies' guidelines. The governing rules of the grant writing are the same for all granting agencies:

• READ... the application instructions carefully.
• FOLLOW... the instructions.
• CALL... when you have a question.
• "Thank you" letter.
