“Investing in our future…TODAY”

Thank you, Washington Mutual for continuing your support of SBISD principals!

Principals from Spring Branch Independent School District will receive scholarships to attend The Principal’s Center at Harvard University in summer 2008, thanks to a $15,000 grant awarded to Spring Branch Education Foundation by Washington Mutual.

“The Foundation Board of Directors is delighted with this generous gift,” says Gary Junek, Board chair. “Last year, Washington Mutual gave us $10,000 for the same purpose, and three principals attended the institute. This summer we will be able to send more principals.”

Washington Mutual increased its gift in order to involve more principals in 2008, according to Joni Baird, First Vice President, Community and External Affairs. “We are pleased to support Spring Branch ISD and its efforts toward professional development and principal excellence. We heard such enthusiastic responses from the educators last summer, we chose to expand the program.”

During the nine-day program principals refine their leadership and management skills and revitalize their personal vision of leadership in a highly interactive environment. They examine the components of a good school and learn how to enhance the quality of the school experience for everyone.

“The most important thing I learned,” says Randolph Adami, principal of Northbrook High School, describing his 2007 experience, “was that whether we [were] from Texas, Australia, Scotland, or Singapore, from schools that were private, public, wealthy or poor, we all had very much in common and we were able to learn from each other.”

Gary Henry, principal of Valley Oaks Elementary, says the experience “made us feel proud to be in the business of educating children.”

Laura Schuhmann, principal of Northbrook Middle School agrees, “One of the best parts was to see 150 other school leaders who all are so professional and dedicated to making their schools the best place for teaching and learning.”

Principals to participate in the 2008 summer program will be selected in the spring.
