State Testing

Beginning with the 2022-2023 school year, the Texas Education Agency implemented the latest version of the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness or STAAR tests. All STAAR tests are now administered online. The STAAR tests assess the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS). Elementary students test in grades 3, 4, and 5 in reading language arts and mathematics, as well as science in grade 5.

The STAAR tests for secondary students in grades 6 through 8 test students in reading language arts and mathematics, as well as science and social studies in grade 8. High school students have STAAR End-of-Course (EOC) exams as their examination requirements for graduation. EOC tests are also given to middle school students taking high school courses.

Per HB 1225, districts may accept a limited number of requests for paper STAAR tests. The deadline for requests for the December EOC test administration is September 15, and for the Spring STAAR 3-8 and EOC administrations, December 1. Requests are on a first come, first served basis, and should be submitted online via the Spring Branch ISD STAAR Paper Request Form.

The state also offers the STAAR Alternate 2 assessment for students who have significant cognitive disabilities and are receiving special education services.

The Texas English Language Proficiency Assessment System (TELPAS) fulfills federal requirements for assessing the English language proficiency of Emergent Bilingual (EB) students in grades K-12 and the TELPAS Alternate assessment is for Emergent Bilinguals (EBs) with the most significant cognitive disabilities who cannot participate in the general English language proficiency assessment. Students must meet participation requirements to take this test.

Accessing State Assessment Scores

Spring Branch ISD will be providing families with STAAR and other state test results electronically utilizing the Texas Assessment Student Portal. The Student Portal provides students and parents with online access to a student’s state assessment scores. This includes STAAR grades 3 – 8, STAAR End-of-Course, STAAR Alternate, TELPAS (Texas English Language Proficiency Assessment System) and TELPAS Alternate.

Skyward has worked with TEA to implement a single sign on option to provide parents with direct access to the online Student Assessment Portal to access state testing results. To enable this access, follow the steps below.

To access the Student Portal via single Sign on in Skyward:

  • Login to Skyward Family Access
  • If a family has more than one student enrolled in SBISD, select one student at a time from the All Students dropdown
  • Then, click on District Links, on the far right, and select TEA Family Portal to view all of your student’s state testing results
