Spring Branch ISD Baseball & Softball: 2022-23 Season Spotlight

Memorial High School Mustangs

Mustang Baseball relies on offseason preparation and team chemistry as they chase championships

With a third-place finish in the district last season, Mustang Baseball hopes to make another run toward championship titles.

“This is a great group of young men that have worked extremely hard in the offseason,” said Head Coach Jeremy York. “They are beginning to gel as a team and we are looking forward to every opportunity to compete.”

Returning to lead the team are four-year letterman Jakob Schulz and three-year lettermen Grayson Lincecum and Mason Sanders.

District matchups are always fun for this team, especially toward the end of district play when playoff hopes are building. However, preseason tournaments are just as exciting. The team is looking forward to the Frisco tournament where they have the opportunity to play top teams and build team chemistry.

“We would like to see everyone in the Mustang community come out and enjoy a game,” said York. “Try some of our great food in the amazing concession stand too.”

Mustang Softball seeking to be a contender within district and playoff games

Daily, the Mustangs work to maintain their level of skill and knowledge of the game. Head Coach Stephanie Mosely believes that this is a great group of athletes capable of constant improvement.

“It is enjoyable to work with them each day and watch them grow up over the four years that we have them,” said Mosely. “It is our goal to be a contender within our district and try and make a little playoff run.”

Watch out for senior shortstop Isabel Heckler, junior second base Emma Alford, junior catcher Quincy Basarowich and sophomore pitcher and first base Elise Adams. All of these players have been starting for at least two years, with Heckler being a four-year starter with tremendous leadership skills.

Mosley wants to see the stands packed for home games at the Memorial High Softball Field, as they strive to put on a great game for the Mustang community.

Northbrook High School Raiders

Coming off a long-awaited winning season, Raider Baseball looks to gain playoff contention

The Raiders’ 2021-22 season marked their first winning season in nearly 30 years, and now the 2022-23 season is looking just as promising.

Head Coach Adam Mealey notes that the eight returning varsity starters should create instant momentum for the team.

“We are looking forward to building off of last season and hopefully make a push to get into the playoffs for the first time since 2015,” said Mealey.

The team is led by senior left-hand pitcher and first baseman Isaiah Ramirez, senior utility Adrian Lopez, senior right-hand pitcher and outfielder Aidan Chevalley and junior middle infielder and outfielder NJ Swinney.

Looking toward the season, the team is excited for the in-district matchups versus Spring Woods and Stratford high schools.

“We want to continue to grow our fanbase with the fantastic parents, students, faculty, alumni, and community members coming out to support us each game,” said Mealey. “Raider field can really get exciting when our stands are full!”

Looking toward district play, Raider Softball hopes to make their mark

Head Coach Gary Howard is excited to have a varsity squad that he believes is filled with captain-caliber athletes.

“They are ready to take on any challenge and are eager to show how special they are,” said Howard. “I feel that they can accomplish great things this season!”

Keep your eye on team captains Katherine Ventura and Gabriela Romero Garcia, pitcher Edelin Barrios Victoria and newcomer Amy Mireles. These four athletes are working hard daily and are prepared to lead the team on and off the field.

Howard and Assistant Coach Taylor Warner are ready to see how the Raiders matchup against district competition this year, especially Stratford and Memorial high schools.

“We would love to see the stands filled with parents, teachers, and friends this season,” said Howard. “Let’s cheer on our Raiders during an incredible season!”

Spring Woods High School Tigers

Tiger Baseball embodies excellence in attitude and work ethic as they strive to make their community proud

In his first year as a head coach, William Pearce is already proud of the growth and development of these players on and off the field.

“They have a great attitude about the game and they have grit,” said Pearce.

The team will be led by senior shortstop Phoenix Reed, senior second baseman Adrian Hernandez, senior center fielder Samuel Manchaca and junior pitcher and third baseman Travis Ainsworth.

Pearce and the team are excited about in-district matchups but are eager to play in preseason tournaments such as the Fort Bend Tournament, where they will test their endurance and attitude.

“These young men put in the work day in and day out,” said Pearce. “We would love to see the stands full every game cheering for these young men.”

Tiger Softball senior class looks to leave a lasting impression on the program and school

The Spring Woods High Tigers are entering their season with 11 seniors who have played softball together since their freshman year. Head Coach Danielle Slater believes the team chemistry gives the team newfound confidence this season.

Of the seniors, third baseman Alexa Valdez, pitcher Madelyn Flores and center fielder Morgan Banks lead the team in skill and knowledge of the game. They are intense players who strive to improve their gameplay daily, as well as the way the team plays as one unit.

The Tigers like to open their season with a lot of excitement in the first set of games. Aside from the beginning of the season, the team is looking forward to honoring their senior class at senior night.

With tremendous support from the community, Slater and the team are thrilled every time the stands are packed.

“Our school is one of a kind,” said Slater. “I am excited for the fans and community to come out and see a great season!”

Stratford High School Spartans

Returning strong veteran leadership, Spartan Baseball starts the season with confidence

According to Head Coach Spencer Richards, the Spartans can compete at a high level throughout the entire season.

“We are returning 10 seniors,” says Richards. “This team has a lot of veteran leadership and has high expectations.”

Players to watch out for are senior pitcher and first baseman Paxton Terveen, senior catcher Alex Skoutelakis, senior shortstop Brecken Menuet, senior infielder John White, junior outfielder Luke Rives and junior pitcher Thomas Cloud. All are players who have strong knowledge of the game and an intense work ethic.

“This team has been working hard to eliminate mishaps in the past and work to get stronger,” according to Richards. “They have been amazing in their ability to embrace change.”

The team is ready for the San Antonio Tournament as well as competing with Memorial and Cy-Fair high schools.

Richards hopes to see the Spartan community at the field rooting the team on.

“We want the entire community to come cheer on this group of young men,” says Richards. “The entire coaching staff believes they will achieve great things.”

Stratford Softball hopes to remain a powerhouse program in district competition

The Spartans are returning a majority of their players, putting the team in a great position to make a solid run through district and postseason play.

“We have upperclassmen with playoff experience, solid leadership and great work ethic,” said Head Coach Karina Scott. “We hope to finish as one of the top teams in the district and make a run in the playoffs.”

Seniors Hayden Houser and Adrianna Estrada are veterans in this program and have experience being varsity starters, so Scott believes their leadership is crucial to the success of the team. Sophomore Marina Taveras is also coming off a great season where she was named District Newcomer of the Year. Scott is excited to see how these three contribute to the team.

“We are excited about every game this year,” said Scott. “Not only is it an opportunity for us to learn and grow, but our district always comes down to the very end to determine rankings and playoff contention.”

Expecting tough competition, Scott hopes to see Spartan America show up for games and give the players support throughout the season.
