A Sea of Orange and the Thunder of Eagles

Memorial Middle School Celebrates 50 Years

Recognition of three former principals, dozens of former or longtime teachers, and unveiling of a large bronze eagle – a gift from the Memorial Middle School PTA – were a few of the highlights during a 50-year celebration at the middle school campus. The program was capped by the an unveiling of a bronze eagle, the school mascot, which will be installed near the main entrance. School PTA President Rikki Graber said that the association had worked for many years to raise funds for the large, winged figure as a “wonderful and lasting” tribute to the golden moment. Honoring Student Achievement

Argonauts Prepare for Sea

Two Spring Branch ISD ninth-graders will join four other “Argonauts” from Oct. 17-21 as the students explore the Caribbean Sea during a research trip aboard the Exploration Vessel (EV) Nautilus, led by oceanographer Dr. Robert Ballard.

Selected earlier this year as 2013 National JASON Argonaut team members are two high school freshmen, Chase Gonsoulin of Northbrook High and Paloma June of Westchester Academy for International Studies.

At sea, students will learn basics of navigation and oceanographic sampling techniques. Since 1990, the Jason program has provided research and learning opportunities to more than 460 students and educators. They join the ship’s Corps of Exploration.



AP Scholar Awards

The College Board has recognized 590 Spring Branch ISD high school graduates and current students that together earned 628 separate Advanced Placement (AP) Scholar Awards.

The students were honored for high scores on numerous AP Exams administered during the 2012-2013 school year.

The AP Program offers AP Scholar Awards to recognize high school students who have demonstrated college-level achievement through AP courses and exams.

Although there is no monetary award, in addition to receiving an award certificate, this achievement is acknowledged on AP score reports that are sent to colleges the following fall.

State and National Awards for Finance

For the fourth year in a row, the SBISD Finance Department has earned a Gold Leadership Circle Award from the state Comptroller’s Office for implementing financial transparency.

In the upcoming year, the department’s award insignia will be posted prominently on the district’s website, and on the Board of Trustees’ and Finance Dept. web pages.


Grants Department Honored for Work

Spring Branch ISD Grants Director Julie Hodson was selected as top state administrator and the district’s Texas ACE (Afterschool Centers on Education) Team was honored during the recently held Golden ACE (Afterschool Centers on Education) Awards Ceremony. The two recognitions were presented in August during an annual meeting in Austin.


Recipe for Success Teacher of the Year

A schoolyard garden and kitchen curriculum at Westwood Elementary School have earned Olga Miles the Golden Whisk Teacher of the Year Award from a Houston-based foundation that aims to improve childhood nutrition and combat youth obesity.
Olga has been selected for the Golden Whisk Award by the Recipe for Success Foundation from the Houston group’s Seed-to-Plate Nutrition Education program.

Volunteers come in all shapes and sizes. Some cook. Some coach. Some teach. At Northbrook Middle School, home of the Knights, Felipa Munoz and Bruce Rollins check all of the above boxes.

A Day of Caring

Three Spring Branch ISD secondary campuses have been ranked among the nation’s top 1,000 high schools on this year’s Newsweek / Daily Beast 2013 Best High Schools rankings.



SKY Partnership Presents at Area CHOICE Symposium

Choice in education is the best choice possible, speakers said during a one-day symposium held recently at the University of Texas in Arlington. The gathering was held Sept. 12 and sponsored by Grand Prairie ISD, a 27,000-student public school district.

The UT-Arlington event, titled “Choice: Its Role in Public Education Today,” attracted state leaders, school superintendents, principals and national experts in education reform. Speakers at the symposium included SBISD SKY Partnership’s Mandelé Davis and KIPP Houston Public Schools founder Mike Feinberg, Ed.D..

Keeping Kids in School

SBISD joined with United Way of Greater Houston and an Alabama judge to begin piloting a tested school disciplinary program with a proven record of reducing the number of student classroom removals for behaviors that are not criminal. Read more >>

SBISD received 51 J. Landon Short Mini-Grant applications this year and awarded 35 grants as a result of generous support from the Spring Branch Education Foundation (SBEF), First Community Credit Union (FCCU), Nexen and funds from the Robert & Janice McNair Endowment for the Mini-Grants. School for the Highly Gifted Opens in SBISD

With the opening of the School for Highly Gifted Students, the Houston region has its first public elementary program designed especially for highly gifted children. This program is another signal that SBISD is committed to meeting the educational needs of all students and to providing choice to students across the district. 2007 Bond Program Celebrates 11th New Campus

Frostwood Elementary School will become the 11th campus to be rebuilt under the 2007 Bond Plan. The Grand Opening celebration is Thursday, Feb. 13, beginning at 4 p.m. Public tours are planned. Fall Fine Arts Calendar Announced

The stage curtains will soon rise on another crowd-pleasing season of student theater and other fine arts events and group performances. This year’s offerings range from choir and orchestra concerts to popular musicals and dramas, as well as the annual district marching band show, Bandstravaganza. Read more >>

Spring Woods High Celebrates 50 Years

Students, staff and alumni at Spring Woods High School began preparing early for a great 50th year with a student poster contest and calendar planning that includes at least one theme event every nine weeks. Read more >>

Stratford High’s Playhouse Thespian Troupe will host its annual “Project Playhouse” from 9 a.m. until noon on Saturday, Nov. 2, in the high school auditorium. Stratford High School is located at 14555 Fern, near the intersection of Dairy Ashford and Fern.

This year’s event theme is based on the upcoming Playhouse musical Legally Blonde, which is based on a novel and movie of the same name. Students in prekindergarten through fifth grade can take part in the playhouse event. Read more >>

Sept. 2013 Board Brief Recap - Tax Rate Remains the Same

The Spring Branch ISD Board of Trustees voted unanimously during the September Board Meeting to adopt a rate that maintains a combined or total tax rate of $1.3945 per $100 of assessed valuation. Spring Branch ISD’s tax rate has now remained the same for five years. Read full Board Brief here >>
