April Athletics Spotlight: Braxton Wakefield - A champion on and off the field
  • 2023-2024

In the dynamic realm of athletics at Stratford High School, Braxton Wakefield stands out as an exemplar of dedication, leadership, and perseverance.

Braxton not only dominates the baseball diamond, but also navigates the complexities of life with unparalleled strength and determination.

Braxton's journey as an athlete has been marked by a relentless pursuit of excellence and an unwavering commitment to his team. Head Baseball Coach Spencer Richards attests to Braxton's impact, "Braxton is a great addition to our program. He continually has grown as a player and a leader on and off the field. We would never have had the opportunities for success here at Stratford without him."

Embracing the challenges of change with grace and resilience, Braxton's journey took a significant turn when a new head coach joined the team during his high school career. Rather than faltering in the face of uncertainty, Braxton rose to the occasion, adapting to the new coaching philosophy and emerging as a beacon of leadership for his teammates.

Reflecting on his growth, Braxton shares, "I think the Core Characteristic that I’ve developed most has been Persistent and Adaptable. With a new coach, I had to adapt and now I love the new coach. I’m also committed, so I reached my goal of college ball."

Braxton's impact extends beyond the diamond, with his leadership and determination shaping the culture of the team and inspiring his peers. As a captain, Braxton has honed his communication skills and learned invaluable lessons about teamwork and responsibility, laying a strong foundation for his future endeavors.

When asked about his favorite moments at Stratford High, Braxton's response reflects the true essence of team spirit. "Honestly, team dinners," he says. "We just bond as a team as we eat and nothing can really beat that." It is this camaraderie and sense of belonging that define Braxton's athletic journey and underscore the impactful power of sports in building relationships and fostering personal growth.

Looking ahead to life beyond high school, Braxton is poised to embark on a new chapter at Southeastern Louisiana University, where he will pursue his passion for baseball while majoring in business. With his tenacity, leadership, and unwavering determination, Braxton is primed to excel both on and off the field, embodying SBISD's Core Characteristics of a T-2-4 Ready Graduate.

In celebrating Braxton Wakefield, we honor not only his achievements as an athlete but also his exemplary character and unwavering commitment to excellence. As he continues to blaze a trail of success, we are #SBISDProud to share his story and witness the bright future that lies ahead.

Spring Woods and Northbrook High Schools Awarded HBI Schools to Skills Grant, Elevating Career and Technical Education (CTE)

Spring Branch ISD (SBISD) proudly celebrates the distinction of having not one, but two of its high schools named recipients of the esteemed 2024 HBI Schools to Skills Grant.

This remarkable achievement, made possible through the generous support of the Greater Houston Builders Association and Stanley Black & Decker, aligns with the district's T-2-4 vision, emphasizing technical, academic, and character development for student success.

"Receiving the Home Builders Institute grant underscores our commitment to providing our students with valuable industry certifications, empowering them for success in the workforce," said SBISD CTE Director, Christina Rice-Imumwen.

The substantial grant award of $17,000 will fuel the implementation of the Home Builders Institute (HBI)’s Pre-Apprenticeship Certificate Training (PACT) programs at both schools. This funding will provide students with access to invaluable training opportunities, offering them a gateway to explore diverse career pathways in residential construction through the comprehensive HBI PACT curriculum.

Endorsed by the U.S. Department of Labor and esteemed by numerous state departments of education, the HBI PACT curriculum is meticulously designed to forge robust connections to the local building industry. Grant dollars will also cover program costs such as licensing, instructor training, and student assessment fees.

“The new the Home Builders Institute (HBI)’s Pre-Apprenticeship Certificate Training (PACT) programs is going to be a great industry based certification for SBISD," said educator Bill Pearce. "This will give our students real world training and skills that will help them after high school and advance the district’s T-2-4 vision. Our instructors are excited to see where this new IBC will take our students.”

The integration of the HBI Schools to Skills Grant at Spring Woods High School and Northbrook High School epitomizes the district's steadfast dedication to furnishing students with comprehensive educational opportunities that equip them for lucrative careers in the technical field.
