2020 Scholastic Art Award winners named
Scholastic Art Award winners

More than 60 young artists enrolled in Spring Branch ISD middle or high schools have received Scholastic Art Awards in annual regional competition sponsored through the Harris County Dept. of Education (HCDE).

Several students were honored with multiple awards in one or more separate categories.

This year, 25 students won Gold Key awards. Their best works now advance for final judging at the national level. In addition, 17 students received Silver Key awards, and 28 students earned Honorable Mention recognitions.

In all, 70 separate recognitions among these talented art students reflect one of the highest award totals ever recorded in recent SBISD Scholastic Award history.

District winners will be honored along with their peers in regional ceremonies on Feb. 21 for middle school winners at Texas Art Supply, 2001 Montrose Blvd., and on Feb. 28 at Spring Street Studios, 1824 Spring St., for high school honorees.

The combined Scholastic Art & Writing Awards highlight and honor young artists and writers who may be the nation’s next generation of creative visionaries. This spring, 1,500 or more students will receive national awards, and join the ranks of famous artists, photographers and writers who include Andy Warhol, Sylvia Plath, Truman Capote, Richard Avedon, Robert Redford and Joyce Carol Oates.

HCDE serves each year as the regional sponsor for the prestigious Scholastic Art program. The regional educational group judges thousands of entries submitted by teen artists. HCDE judges routinely view and evaluate thousands of student submissions from across Harris County.
