A Message from Chief Larry Baimbridge

As we begin the new year, I want to share a few important reminders about student safety, both on our playgrounds and while traveling to and from school.

Playgrounds are meant to be safe spaces for active student play. To help prevent injuries, we remind families that playgrounds are for feet only.

Bikes, scooters, hoverboards, and other wheeled or motorized devices should be parked and secured and not used on playgrounds or play equipment. While these items can be enjoyable, they require clear rules and awareness to ensure they are used safely and in appropriate areas.

I also encourage families to actively supervise children on our playgrounds, especially younger students. Adult supervision plays an important role in preventing injuries and helping students make safe choices.

Safety does not stop at the school gate. Whether students are traveling to and from school during the school day or after hours, it is important that they remain alert and aware of their surroundings.

Please talk with your children about basic personal safety, including staying in groups when possible, avoiding interaction with strangers, and trusting their instincts if something does not feel right.

If something does not seem right, trust your instincts and say something. Our schools and neighborhoods are safest when we look out for one another. In the event of an emergency, always call 911 right away.

Our shared goal is to keep students safe at school, on the playground, and throughout the community. Thank you for partnering with us and reinforcing these safety expectations with your children as we start the new year.
