A Message from Dr. Blaine, SBISD Superintendent of Schools

Good Evening, SBISD Families,

Thank you so much for your cooperation, patience and understanding as our entire region faced unanticipated weather and flooding situations today.  I want to thank all of our school leaders, campus teachers and staff, and our central office teams for their hard work today on behalf of our 35,000 students.

Please understand that student safety is at the forefront of every decision we make, and we never make decisions in isolation. We also monitor and adjust if, and when, new information becomes available.

Regional superintendents begin collaborating with City, County and local officials days in advance of a weather event. Our calls with Harris County Meteorologist Jeff Lindner began at 3:00 a.m. Tuesday. On our 3:00 a.m. call this morning, only districts directly impacted by the landfall of Tropical Storm Imelda were cancelling school today.

A mid-morning call was added today based on new storm projections for our area. After that call, districts including SBISD cancelled after-school activities. As a parent of an SBISD student, I understand that changes in after-school activities are often difficult, as families have to make alternative plans.

Throughout the day, City and County officials affirmed dangerous high water throughout the area and urged residents to remain in place and off the roads. Our SBISD Police advised that we hold students at the end of the day based on dangerous conditions and flooded streets throughout the Spring Branch area. Chief Dareing gave the all-clear to release students when road conditions improved.

Regional Superintendents will have a 3:00 a.m. call again tomorrow morning to assess conditions and make determinations about school on Friday. I encourage you to monitor SBISD social media @SBISD, our website (springbranchisd.com), and local media. We would do a call-out as early as possible tomorrow morning should we have any reason to cancel school on Friday. No decision has been made at this time.

Once again, please know I will always make the safety of our children my number one priority.

Thank you,

Jennifer Blaine, Ed.D.
