Athletes In Action: Addie Gwaltney Class of 2025 Leads Mustangs Water Polo Team

The splash of water and the referee's whistle signal the start of the game. Lined up at opposing ends of the pool, teammates tread water, ready to compete in women's varsity water polo.

Addie Gwaltney, a senior at Memorial High School (MHS) and teammate #12, grew up in the water. As a lifelong swimmer, the pool has always felt like a second home. When she entered high school, she discovered water polo through the MHS swim team. After trying out the sport her freshman year, she took a season off her sophomore year before returning as a junior. Embracing the challenge of growth, Gwaltney returned for her senior year with her sights set on leading her teammates as captain.

Serving as captain has made a lasting impression on Gwaltney, both in and out of the pool. "It really taught me how to lead people and improve myself by working with them," Gwaltney said. "I love this team, and I believe the people you're around matter. I wouldn't be as good as I am without my teammates." Her dedication has not gone unnoticed.

Head Coach Jason Mauss praised Gwaltney’s growth. "Addie is a great teammate in and out of the pool. She knows when to be serious and when to keep it fun," he said. "There’s a big mental aspect in sports, so we focus on things we can control—like intensity, attitude, and effort. The little things matter, so we review the basics often."

Looking ahead, Gwaltney’s days in the pool are far from over. As she approaches graduation, she plans to apply to the Air Force or the Naval Academy. Serving the United States has been a goal of hers throughout high school, as she seeks the structure and camaraderie that come with military service. While in college, Gwaltney plans to join a club water polo team to continue her passion for the sport.

We are #SBISDProud of Addie, who embodies two critical Core Characteristics of a T-2-4 Ready Graduate: Persistence and Adaptability, as well as Communication and Collaboration. Her role as team captain reflects her strong leadership qualities, rooted in the belief that to lead, one must first serve others—a principle that will guide her throughout her life. Her contributions to the Mustangs' team will have a lasting impact for generations to come.
