Art Car Shimmy brings Limitless Curiosity to SBISD

Students cheered and clapped as art cars drove through their school’s driveways during Spring Branch ISD’s Art Car Shimmy on Friday, April 14.

“I love seeing all the decorated cars! It’s exciting to see the artist’s creativity reflected in their cars,” said Candan, a Spring Forest Middle School student. “It’s one of my favorite events!”

The Art Car Shimmy is SBISD’s smaller version of Houston’s Art Car Parade, which celebrated its 36th anniversary and took place on Saturday, April 15. The events celebrate creativity through art and allow artists across Houston to show their culture, uniqueness and imagination.

“Art Car Shimmy is more than just art. It is the perfect space where art, engineering and whimsy meet to make something amazing happen!” said Rebecca Mustachio, art teacher at Spring Forest Middle School and one of the event organizers.

This year’s Art Car Shimmy featured over 30 decorated cars that visited 15 schools. During each stop, students voted for their favorite car and awarded the owner a trophy.

Stephanie Walton, art teacher at Wilchester Elementary and one of the event organizers, notes that the Art Car Shimmy is a great event that allows students to connect with people, cultures and community art programs.

Walton’s art students also decorated an art car, which made its way through SBISD schools.

“The artists that ride in SBISD’s Art Car Shimmy come from all walks of life and from all over the world,” said Walton. “Some are full-time artists and some only enjoy art as a hobby, but they all encourage the creative spirit in their community. Students need to know that there are many opportunities to explore art in different ways!”

Parent volunteers also participated in this year’s event. They helped guide students through the art cars and were excited for their children to have such a unique experience.

“I was having a conversation with a friend and mentioned that my daughter would be participating in the art car parade and she said her children did not have such an exciting event at their school!” said Lizbeth Saldaña, a parent volunteer at Pine Shadows Elementary. “I’m glad SBISD connects students to art in this way at such a young age.”
