Assistance League of Houston goes above and beyond to support Spring Branch ISD students

Since 1985, the Assistance League of Houston has partnered with Spring Branch ISD to bring Operation School Bell to Title I pre-K center and elementary school students and provide them with clothing items for the school year. Operation School Bell began in 1967 and has greatly expanded since.

The Assistance League of Houston is an SBISD Good Neighbor, a program established in 2005 that recognizes district partners. To qualify, an individual or organization must complete at least three activities in support of the district, a school or the Spring Branch Education Foundation in a school year.

“We partner with SBISD to make sure children and families in need have access to uniforms and school supplies,” said Stella Evensen, Operation School Bell co-chair. “Our mission is to promote success in schools and give students hope and inspiration for a brighter tomorrow.”

The organization partners with Communities in School social workers to identify students in need. For the 2022-23 school year, they donated more than $46,000 in uniforms for students at 19 SBISD pre-K centers and elementary schools.

“The Assistance League of Houston is a superlative Good Neighbor partner,” said Associate Superintendent of Communications and Community Engagement Linda Buchman. “Their support ensures hundreds of our students start the school year ready to learn with new uniforms and school supplies needed for success.”

But their efforts to help students do not stop there.

Last school year, the Assistance League of Houston participated in Action Week at The Tiger Trail School, where they distributed 125 books to students. Additionally, they engaged community members to read to the students.

Assistance League of Houston also provided 16 scholarships, each valued at $1,375, to Class of 2022 seniors across SBISD high schools.

“We thank the Assistance League volunteers whose fundraising and volunteer supports make great things happen for SBISD students,” concluded Buchman.
