HEART is coming to the Memorial area, thanks to the Altharetta Yeargin Art Museum (AYAM), which has created and is curating the bi-annual Houston Elite ART (HEART) exhibit and auction to showcase Houston’s leading artists. The inaugural event begins with an open house and artist event on Saturday, October 20, 5-8 p.m., at AYAM, 901 Yorkchester.

Participating artists include Dan Allison, Katy Anderson and Patrick Medrano, Joseph Culotta, Tarina Frank, Dixie Friend Gay, Sharon Kopriva, Jackie Liddell, Edward Lane McCartney, Kelly Moran, James Phillips, Carol Wells and Richard Williams, among others. Artist participation is being coordinated by Sally Doyle, Spring Branch ISD visual arts coordinator, and Rebekah Tee, Spring Woods High School artist-in-residence.

The exhibition includes art from paintings to video, from jewelry to pottery. Pieces from each artist will be included in the auction. Bidding for the auction concludes on November 3.

Community invited to participate

Rest by Patrick Renner

“Even before guests enter the museum doors, they will have an idea of what to expect from HEART,” says Kathy Goss, AYAM co-curator. Rest, a 15-foot metal and wood installation, is being created by sculptor Patrick Renner. Houstonians will remember his Funnel Tunnel on the esplanade of Montrose Boulevard from 2013 to 2015.

“We’re inviting the community to be part of Rest’s conception,” Leann Newton, co-curator says. On Saturday, October 6, 10 a.m. – 1 p.m., amateur artists of all ages are encouraged to stop by the museum to paint a length of wood that will become part of the sculpture. Rest is sponsored by J. Carter Breed Properties.

Meet the artists

The public is invited to meet the artists at the October 20 open house. Admission for the open house is $25 and includes a one-year membership to AYAM. HEART will continue through November 3, Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m., and Saturday, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. A $5 donation is requested.

HEART sponsorships are available. Contact Leann Newton at leann.ayam@yahoo.com.

About Altharetta Yeargin Art Museum

Thought to be the nation’s only art museum located on a public school campus, AYAM is an art experiential destination for students of all ages. When Altharetta Yeargin, Spring Branch ISD’s first art teacher, donated her art collection to SBISD, the district partnered with The Smithsonian Institution to design the current facility. It houses a collection of art and artifacts valued at more than $2 million and includes more than 600 works from around the world. The Museum is supported by individual and foundation donors.
