Building their future: 500+ SBISD girls participate in #SheBuildsHouston event

More than 500 Spring Branch ISD middle and high school girls put on pink hard hats and vests to attend the #SheBuildsHouston event on March 3 at the Alief Center for Advanced Careers.

#SheBuildsHouston is a construction exploration event hosted by Construction Career Collaborative (C3) in conjunction with the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) Houston Chapter. This year, C3 and NAWIC invited students from both Spring Branch ISD and Alief ISD to participate.

Upon arrival, students broke off into groups, received custom hard hats and vests, visited booths to learn about construction industry leaders in the Houston area, and had roundtable discussions with local women who are experts in this field. Throughout the day, students had the opportunity to use construction tools, learn safety techniques, and participate in various construction activities.

“As part of Spring Branch ISD’s Career and Technical Education (CTE) focus, we have really worked hard on cultivating relationships with business industry leaders. Through these relationships, we can garner opportunities for our students, such as the opportunity to participate in #SheBuildsHouston,” SBISD CTE Director Christina Rice-Imumwen said.

“To have an event that is geared towards women and the promotion of women in the construction industry makes us really excited about the exposure we can give these students as part of SBISD’s T-2-4 vision,” she added.

“Our industry competes against all other industries to attract the best and brightest to our field,” Angela Robbins Taylor, Executive Director of C3, said. “We want young women to know that construction is a viable option with career paths that begin right out of high school, trade school, junior colleges and universities.”
