To celebrate the end of their writing unit, Bunker Hill Elementary fourth grade students engaged in Comic-Con, an annual event where they have the opportunity to create their own graphic novels and present them to other students, teachers, staff and parents.

“This is a very important event, as it gives students creative freedom,” said Amy Dabbs, a fourth grade teacher at Bunker Hill and one of the event coordinators. “It gives them a chance to express their artistic side, while also promoting their literacy skills.”

The students were allowed to choose any topic on which to base their graphic novel. They were also encouraged to dress up as one of the characters in their stories.

In their creative stories, students excitedly highlighted a variety of characters, including taco superheroes, flying bananas and talking squirrels.

The event began in 2019 as part of the teaching curriculum. Dabbs notes that the students enjoyed it so much that they decided to make it an annual event.

“Comic-Con is not only exciting for our fourth graders but for all students,” added Dabbs. “They get to see what they will be working on in the coming years, and it makes them eager to learn.”
