Celebrating the Class of 2024: Brenda Bulnes

“I’ve encountered many excellent teachers, coaches, and mentors throughout my time in the district. Without a doubt, SBISD has the most encouraging staff ever. They always inspired me to reach for the stars when I doubted myself.”

What did you enjoy most about going to school in Spring Branch ISD (SBISD)?

As a kid, I moved a lot and never felt like I belonged at any of the schools I attended. I felt at home from day one when I came to SBISD. The staff here is exceptionally kind and welcoming. School offers various clubs and organizations for students from all socioeconomic backgrounds, giving every student the opportunity to succeed.

During your high school years, in which activities did you participate?

In my freshman and sophomore years, I was involved in swimming. I’ve also played on the tennis team and am currently the captain. I’m a member of the National Honor Society and Emerge. Just this year, I climbed the ranks to become the 2024 class president after serving terms as treasurer and vice president. I have participated in summer programs like Rice Summer Immersion and Thrive Scholars. I balanced these activities and my studies, all while holding down jobs at various restaurants.

What advice would you give to incoming freshmen about to start high school?

My advice to incoming freshmen would be to “enjoy the moment.” While it’s easy to get caught up in the idea of graduating, thoughts of college, or to prom, the years go by quickly, and it’s important to live in the present. Everything will come eventually, so take a deep breath and enjoy the ride. The future will be here soon enough.

What will you miss most about SBISD?

What I will miss most is the supportive community and staff. I’ve encountered many excellent teachers, coaches, and mentors in the district. Without a doubt, our school has the most encouraging staff ever. They always inspired me to reach for the stars when I doubted myself. Whenever I felt tired, they always encouraged me to keep fighting. I received advice from them that changed my life and only helped me grow.

What is one fun or surprising fact about you?

A fun fact about me is that I have two fur-daughters. My oldest cat is eight years old, and we got her when she was just a baby. Now, she is chunky and grumpy. My other cat is 3 years old, and I was there when she was born. She was the most affectionate cat ever. My furballs are like my children, and I couldn’t have gotten through high school without them.

Where are you headed next?

I’m headed to Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, on a full-ride scholarship through Questbridge National College Match to study environmental engineering. I want to become someone who changes the world!
