La’Nyah Davis, a member of Northbrook High School’s (NHS) Class of 2025, has experienced a journey of growth and resilience throughout her high school years.
From her early days as a freshman to her final year, La’Nyah has matured into a confident young woman with clear goals and important lessons learned.
“When I first started high school, I was very childish and didn’t take things seriously,” La’Nyah said. “Now, as a senior, I can see how freshmen behave, and it reminds me I was just like them.” Over time, she has learned the value of being true to herself. “One of the key lessons I’ve learned is to not try to fit in but to stand out and be yourself. It’s important to avoid trying to be like others and always stay focused in class.”
La’Nyah’s high school experience wasn’t without challenges. After spending her first two years at Northbrook, her family moved, and she transferred to a new school for junior year. That transition brought unexpected difficulties. “My first day at the new school was tough because I was being bullied,” she recalled. Despite that rough patch, La’Nyah found her way back to Northbrook and is now finishing strong.
A major source of support has been Coach Williams, who helped La’Nyah with the transfer process and encouraged her every step of the way. “Coach Williams went above and beyond to help me complete all my paperwork so I could continue playing the sport I love,” La’Nyah said. “She pushed me to reach my goal of making First Team All-District by holding me accountable every day during practice.”
Looking ahead, La’Nyah has her sights set on college and a future career as a crime scene investigator. “I’ve always been interested in solving mysteries, and watching crime shows inspired me,” she said. “I want to help my community as much as I can.”
La’Nyah credits much of her personal growth to improving her attitude. “I used to have a negative attitude, which made it hard to make friends,” she admitted. “But by working on that, I’ve become more positive, and now I have more friends than I ever imagined. People feel comfortable talking to me because of that change.”
Her advice to younger students is simple and sincere: “Never forget who you are and don’t change for anyone else. Stay positive. Things might get tough, but you can overcome any challenges if you stay focused and determined. And make sure to attend every event to create lasting memories with your new friends.”
When asked to sum up her high school experience in one word, La’Nyah chose “rough.” “The first two years at Northbrook were great, but moving and switching schools made junior year difficult,” she explained. Yet through it all, she has persevered, grown, and is ready to graduate with pride.
