Class of 2025: Suhani Singh

For Suhani Singh, high school at Westchester Academy for International Studies (WAIS) has been nothing short of transformative — a journey marked by discovery, creativity and a steady climb toward self-assurance.

“My high school experience has been filled with growth, discovery and resilience,” Suhani said. “Theater taught me to embrace vulnerability and creativity, while advanced choir helped me understand the power of discipline and unity. Both gave me joy and helped me build confidence and lifelong friendships.”

Discovering Confidence Through Challenge

Suhani entered high school still discovering her strengths, but by senior year had grown into someone who embraces challenges and leads with purpose. Key lessons along the way included learning how to manage time, ask for help and stay true to long-term goals — even when balancing heavy course loads and extracurricular commitments.

One defining moment came during junior year, when juggling IB classes and after-school activities became overwhelming. “I had to rethink how I managed my time and energy,” she recalled. “I learned to stay organized, prioritize my mental well-being and ask for support when I needed it.”

Educators Who Shaped the Journey

Throughout high school, Suhani credits a number of teachers for her growth — not just academically, but personally.

“Mrs. Faleiro, my choir director, nurtured my love for music and gave me a safe space to grow emotionally,” she said. “She supported me not just as a student, but as a person — always making time to listen and lift me up.”

From the stage to the classroom, Suhani also found inspiration through theater teacher Ms. Bethancourt, senior English teacher Ms. Clay and literature mentor Ms. Heil — all of whom challenged her to think critically and use her voice boldly. Spanish teacher Ms. Rodriguez and physics teacher Ms. Knott rounded out a powerful group of role models who helped expand Suhani’s worldview and strengthen her interest in STEM.

Whether it was a quiet moment of encouragement or an after-school writing session that led to a contest win, these teachers helped shape the person Suhani is today.

Building a Future in Innovation

Outside the arts, Suhani discovered a passion for materials science and engineering — a field inspired by science fairs, documentaries on nanotechnology and hands-on lab experiences.

“My dream is to earn a degree in materials science and help develop sustainable technologies or medical devices,” she said. “In five to 10 years, I hope to be working in research, contributing to innovations that make a difference.”

She plans to bring the lessons of high school — resilience, teamwork and discipline — into college and beyond.

“The IB program helped me become more self-aware and better at managing responsibility,” she said. “It pushed me to collaborate, communicate and think globally.”

Leading With Heart

Through choir, theater and academic leadership, Suhani developed a set of personal traits she’ll carry forward: resilience, empathy and adaptability.

“I’ve worked hard on my communication and self-discipline,” she said. “It’s helped me become a dependable teammate and a more supportive friend and leader.”

She hopes her perseverance, kindness and leadership have made a lasting impression.

“I want to be remembered as someone who encouraged others, stayed optimistic and believed in doing their best,” she said.

A Word of Advice — and Gratitude

To younger students just starting their high school journey, Suhani offers this wisdom: “Be curious. Don’t fear failure. Take every opportunity to grow, and remember — high school isn’t just about achievement, it’s about becoming.”

While she wouldn’t change anything about the journey, she does wish she had worried less about perfection. “I wish I had taken more creative and academic risks earlier on.”

Looking back, Suhani is full of gratitude.

“Thank you to all my teachers, family and friends for being my support system,” she said. “And a special thank-you to my twin sister — your encouragement pushed me to become the best version of myself.”

Looking Ahead With Purpose

As graduation nears, Suhani is focused on the future — and on making a meaningful impact through science and innovation.

“My biggest goal is to contribute to meaningful innovations in materials science,” she said. “Staying curious, collaborating with others and never stopping the learning process will help me get there.”

And as she prepares to take her next step, Suhani hopes to be remembered by the Class of 2025 for her optimism, work ethic and generosity.

“I hope I made a positive impact,” she said, “by showing others that with belief in yourself and the right support, anything is possible.”
