Class of 2026 Spotlight I Mary Helen Turner

Mary Helen Turner, a senior at Memorial High School (MHS), vividly remembers her time as a student at Hunters Creek Elementary School (HCE) in the Spring Branch Independent School District (SBISD). She says it was there that she developed the confidence, study habits, and sense of responsibility that would help her grow and flourish.

But throughout her journey throughout the district, she would say that it wasn’t necessarily a single program or milestone that shaped her. It was the people.

“The teachers and staff have consistently supported, encouraged, and challenged me to grow academically and personally,” she said. “I’m extremely grateful for their presence in my life, and for help shaping me into the person I am today.”

Among those SBISD teachers who have had a profound impact on Mary Helen’s life are Mrs. Scott, Mrs. Looney, Mrs. Young and Mrs. Laura Kohlmaier.

“They recognized my potential, even in moments when I didn’t see it in myself, and pushed me to keep going,” she said.

Beyond the classroom, Mary Helen says participating in athletics has had a profound impact on her life, teaching her lessons that no textbook could. From her coaches, particularly Coach Pamela Thompson and Coach Halee Edwards, she learned to persevere through setbacks, push past her limits, and stay focused when things got tough. Those pivotal moments strengthened her resilience, which she carries with her now and will carry into the future.

“SBISD taught me many things, but above all, they taught me to become someone who is resilient in the face of adversity,” she said.

It is those life lessons that will suit her well as she prepares for her next chapter, when she plans to attend the University of Virginia to pursue a four-year degree. At this point, she’s not sure which path she will explore, but is excited about any possibilities.

As she looks ahead, Mary Helen says she is bringing more than strong academics to college; she’s bringing the habits and mindset she built over the years in SBISD: showing up prepared, asking questions, and leaning into challenges even when the outcome is uncertain.

As graduation approaches, Mary Helen is ready to dive into her next chapter, grateful to the educators and coaches who shaped her and confident in the foundation MHS helped her build.

“I don't know exactly where this next chapter will take me, but I know SBISD gave me everything I need to figure it out,” she said.
